Sean paul and a Cowbell?

I'll be honest with you, there were a lot of things about this song that I disliked. Foremost was the cow bell. Totally the wrong sound for this track. I also wasn't a big fan of the echo effect you used on it. So I think it's fair for me to say this was far from my favorite track of the week.

HOWEVER, I'm not just rating you based on how much I personally liked the track, but on how well-put-together it is in general. So, speaking more objectively, the sweeper you used was a bit loud, but the EQ was otherwise pretty spotless. Even on the echoing cow bell I hated, I still gotta admit, it was well executed.

So all in all, I hate your track, but I respect your abilities as a producer.

Ear candy anyone?

Nice buildup from the beginning until 1:40, but your beat really drops in unexpectedly at that point; i think it might have been better had you faded it in more gradually. I did like the way your synths never really took a back-seat to the kick punch beat though (not that I'm a big fan of kick punch, myself).

Really well mastered track, all around and with a great variety of synths that don't get too repetitive. However, at 3:05 you have this one sort-of drum roll and you ramp the volume up for the finale, but if i may humbly suggest trying fruity compressor, i think it might achieve the 'hard' sound you were looking for over that section without having to turn the volume up so much. Anyway, it's a fairly small complaint for 5 seconds out of 4 minutes, so nice work!

I know what you mean *sigh* =__=... I really ruined it from 1:42 onwards...

To be completely honest, I did this song in separate days... the first day was from 0:00-1:42 and the rest was rushed another day (simply because I couldn't stand seeing it rot in my archives). It's a flaw I have which I should fix.

About your suggestion, I'll give Fruity Compressor a try, but before that I should definitely find some tutorials on Youtube or something.

Thanks for your constant tips.

P.S. You're way too kind with the score, btw ^__^.

nice track!

It's a bit long on the intro, considering the whole track's only 2:41 long, but it was a nice intro... I also liked the drum roll you used to close out the chord progression. Strange bell synth though during that break around 2:00/ I was expecting something a bit chunkier. All in all, it was a good track, but maybe a bit quieter than I'm used to from you. If I didn't know you were capable of better, I'd have given you a 9 or a 10, but you know it as well as I do.

SFaPiL2 responds:

capable of better? Thanks ^__^.

Yeah, I should be extending on this one (and modifying the part from 2:00-end).

I have absolutely no time for songs lately, so I'll see what I can do in the near future.

Thanks once more for your time ^__^.

Nice job trying to make the flute stand alone...

Really nice use of the flute at the beginning, and I liked how you kept the strings subtle in the background. My only comment would have been to drop the echo effect after 1:20, when you started sustaining the notes. I would have liked to see it progress a little quicker, too. It felt a bit like bare bones by the 2:00 mark when the flute was still the only instrument in the foreground.

It was nice, though, when you did bring other instruments into the mix, like that timpani. Well done, and nice EQ all 'round.

Not quite techno, but technically great.

I really liked the way this track came on gradually, without using any really overbearing synths. I just wish you'd faded the kick in a bit, because during the intro it's overpowering even though it's at the right level during the remainder of the track. It's funny to me that you missed that, because the rest of the EQ I thought was pretty spotless (especially the way you made that gretch synth ping pong).

I really liked the gerenally relaxing and ambient feel to the song (in fact, I think I would have classified it as ambient if it hadn't been for that kick drum), but because you called it techno, I was expecting a bit more build-up. Still it was a great track. Usually something 4:00 long turns out to be longer than it should; in this case, I wanted to hear more of it.

Nice work!

Huh... I think the overpowering kick drum is caused by the mastering. I think it's fine.

Thanks for listening. -KN

Fewer percs next time P L Z ! ! !

A whole lot of vibraphone-ish percs... I don't know whether it's my personal taste or the objective timbre of the synths you used, but it seemed... off-putting... somehow. Don't get me wrong, this track isn't bad, but I would have liked to hear the brass section come in a lot sooner, and the percs take a small break at some point.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts. I will take them into consideration as I continue to revitalize these track sets.

I F*CKIN HATE AUTOTUNING

Funny lyrics, but seriously... autotuning is the bane of my existence. Also, Beowulf was a SHIT movie.

I'm not voting on this track because I'm not enough of a douche bag to give you a 1/5 just for using an autotuner But, at the same time, I can't give it a good rating because you used an autotuner.

enjoy the 2/10!

MikeTaylor responds:

If you actually listened to the lyrics, we mentioned how much we hated the movie. (It's also one of the oldest books in history.) The auto-tuning was done for comedic effect. If there was a comedy section in the audio portal, I would have much rather put it in there. Thanks for not 0 bombing, although I must disagree with the 2/10, even if you hate auto-tuning.

Well written AND played

Assuming you wrote and played this, I'm impressed with the chord progression you went with. Also very interesting change of tempo from 3/4 to 4/4. Was maybe a bit awkward the first time I heard it but, when I listened to it again, I thought it really made the staccato piano contrast the otherwise dark chord progression.

Awesome job writing this. I hope I get to hear more.

Pandaguru responds:

Thanks a lot for the review! I am glad you enjoyed it. I am glad you came to terms with the 3/4 tempo, I thought it was the perfect mechanism to achieve the contrast I was going for.

It's decent, but it's backwards.

This needed more than just piano. It's not a bad idea for a song, but it's too slow to go anywhere without a pad or some other instruments supporting it. Also, I thought you should consider reversing the intro and the finale. As it stands, I thought your track sort of deconstructed itself, rather than building up to a crescendo. If you listen to it looped, I'm sure you'll find that the intro to this track IS the crescendo you should be looking for at the end.

Awesome work

Really nice fade in at the intro. I liked the echo effect you used too. This had a great diversity of synths going for it as well as a deep echoed bass. Both those things made this track feel like it had some real depth to it. I really liked the subtlety with which you faded the beat in when you wanted it there. It was just right, considering the way your arrangement of synths made the track feel like it had a beat of its own.

Most of the time, people attempting this sort of track end up cluttering it with too many synths playing at once. But your judicious use of all of them and your great work with the EQ made it really easy to listen to.

I hope you make tops of the week.

Thank you. This is possibly the most constructive review I've come across.
