That person-sized joint, tho...

Am I allowed to give this a 6? I mean dayum that was well done!

Great animation, and I get the whole training bit making it kinda like Dragonball. But, at the same time I kinda feel like there wasn't much DBZ flavor to this aside from the background music, which was great. I just think it could have had a few more elements to make it really feel like some kind of cross over.

Wasn't all that impressed with the story line until the very last second. That joke made the whole thing for me. Nice.

I've learned my lesson:

Notoriety feels good, even if it's for killin' zebras. Thanks again for taking my joke way too seriously; it made for one funny flash!

You forgot one: CHAINSAWED ZEBRA!!!

ZebraHumor responds:

Thank you very much! That punchline didn't make it into the main site yet, but you will be credited when it is.

Stay tuned for further volumes of Red Zebra. Either Red Zebra Vol. 2 or Vol. 3 will be violent.

Hadoken to the nuts with coffee? It's original, but really not that funny. Might have been better if these were street fighter characters or something, but this was just way too random for my taste.

Also, I'd suggest increasing the volume on the voices.

Why did sonic turn gray with a blue aura?! Wouldn't it make more sense to use the traditional super-sonic version, where he becomes all yellow and sparkly?

Thebest14 responds:

The super sonic things always being used so i wanted to use dark sonic

Spec-f*cking-tacular!

The animation was flawless and creative. I thought the grainy, sketchy style really suited the song perfectly. I really liked the way you brought the song's lyrics to life for more than just one character, and how it spanned several timelines at once without getting confusing.

I think my favorite part was the gui-saxo-tar-phone player. Great idea to alternate solos like that, and even better to have the same guy playin' 'em.

Really lookin' forward to seeing/hearing more from you!

Great on so many levels

Just the idea of using luminance contrast to convey gender was a great start. Then you added the nuance of their contrasts setting them apart, in different worlds. It made me think of how these two might be like yin and yang to one another.

I'll admit the plot itself was a bit simplistic, but it was more than enough to convey the ultimate message on its own. All I would say is that it's so blatant that you don't really need to spell it out at the end; just leave it to the viewer to understand what you were going for, and I would bet that most would.

I'm wondering why you picked dragon/snake/wurm creatures instead of people as your characters. Not that I disliked it -- it's just the only artistic decision you made that I can't really connect with the rest.

Anyway, I hope Courtney enjoyed it as much as everyone on NG did. And if not, you should totally divorce her 'cause this was great!

5's & 10's all around.

Horsenwelles responds:

if i had chosen people, it would have psychologically been less interesting. human romance has been studied and analyzed since the beginning of the human existence. if i had chosen people, you'd be less inclined to believe that the situation could happen.

as for dragons, they are simple minded, they are animalistic, they are very hard to read, but the simplicity of an animal's goal, and the legnths that creature will go to for them, is much more interesting to me at least, than a story about 2 people on the opposite sides of a wall.

as for.... why the actual choice of dragons as animals though? well any animal could really show the struggle, but the idea was something creating a barrier around them to emerge through, and really.... only people and dragons can, and with dragons, your really showing purity, where as humans are far less.

thank you for the wonderful review though!
